Made planting plans for the model allotment area. It is laid out in a three bed rotation system with the ‘other’ category fitted in were we can.
The three beds are divided into legumes, umbellifers and brassicas, which require different nutrient needs. Potatoes and onions will be given their own area.
The other category includes courgettes, pumpkins, marrows, runner beans, salads, sweetcorn, cucumbers, chicory, chard, spinach and beetroot. (7 hrs)
Cultivated the soil ready for direct sowing and planting out greenhouse grown crops. (7 hrs)
Planted peas ‘Ambassador’ & ‘Oregon Sugar Pod’, broad beans ‘Karmazyn’, chard ‘Bright Eyes’ and courgettes that had been grown indoors. Planted onion sets. Sowed beetroot, carrot, turnip intercropped with radish and Endamame soya beans. (6 hrs)
Tomatoes and Chillies
Potted on tomatoes and chillies in module tray, 6 of each variety. Planted deep and held by leaves so not to damage the stems. Watered, labeled and placed in the heated polytunnel. (7 hrs)
Sowed 16 varieties of sunflowers (Helianthus). 6 per tray x 3. Labeled, watered and placed in the heated melon pit. (3 hrs)
Herbs and flower border seeds
Sowed seeds for the herb garden in half tray containers. Potted on herbaceous perennials. (6 hrs)
Bridal wreath (Spiraea ‘Arguta’) deciduous shrub is ideal for a sunny, well-drained shrub or mixed border.
Daisy (Bellis perennis) an evergreen perennial
Mountain witch alder (Fothergilla major) rounded deciduous shrubs with broadly ovate leaves often colouring well in autumn, and small, catkin-like spikes of white flowers in spring.
Mountain dogwood (Cornus nuttallii) is a conical deciduous tree.
Dragon tree (Dracaena draco) a slow-growing evergreen tree. Grow under glass grow in loam-based potting compost in full light and shade from hot sun. Plant range: Canary Islands. Can be grown outside in the summer (5 – 10).
Star magnolia (Magnolia stellata) is a slow-growing medium-sized deciduous shrub. Plant range: Japan.
Dog’s tooth violet ‘Pagoda’ (Erythronium ‘Pagoda’) is a perennial, plant in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil in partial shade that does not dry out.
Cusick’s camass (Camassia) bulbous perennials.
Climbing hydrangea (Hydrangea anomala subsp. petiolaris) is a large self-clinging, deciduous climber with broadly oval leaves turning yellow in autumn. Plant range: Japan & S Korea. Ultimate height: 12 metres. Best grown in partial shade.
We were very kindly given a guided tour of the gardens at Manley Knoll in Cheshire. We met up with the gardeners and were able to discuss tips on opening for the National Open Garden Scheme. Croxteth Hall Walled Garden will be opening for the first time on 26th August.
